A worrying case has raised the alarm in several European countries, shaking confidence in products intended for the little ones. Austrian authorities have discovered the presence of a toxic substance, identified as rat poison, in a jar of HiPP baby food, specifically in a 190-gram product with carrot and potato puree.

The incident is not isolated. Similar tests in the Czech Republic and Slovakia have given preliminary signals of the same risk, making the incident no longer an isolated issue that requires immediate response. As a safety measure, over 1,500 supermarkets have withdrawn the products from circulation.

The manufacturer HiPP has confirmed the presence of the poison and does not rule out the possibility of a deliberate criminal act. The company says the incident may be the result of external interference and, as a precautionary measure, all products have been withdrawn from shelves.

Meanwhile, police are urging consumers to be extra careful, warning of suspicious signs such as damaged lids, unusual labels or strange smells.

In a market where baby food safety is considered non-negotiable, this incident brings to mind how fragile the chain of trust from producer to consumer can be.
