Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has agreed to pay a multi-million dollar fine in the United States, without admitting or denying charges against him in a wide-ranging corruption case. According to documents from his company, the Adani Group, the agreement includes a total payment of about $18 million from Adani and his associates, as part of investigations launched by US authorities.

The case, opened in November 2024 in New York, accused Adani and associates of involvement in a bribery scheme worth about $250 million, allegedly aimed at securing solar power contracts in India and defrauding international investors.

According to the indictment, the scheme allegedly involved payments to Indian officials to secure favors in major energy projects, harming investors in the US. However, Adani has repeatedly denied the allegations, describing them as “baseless”. In a letter to the Mumbai Stock Exchange, his company stressed that the financial agreement does not constitute an admission of guilt and that the case does not involve Adani Green Energy itself. According to US media reports, federal prosecutors had considered the possibility of withdrawing the charges, while behind the scenes new legal negotiations and possible investment commitments by the Adani group in the US have also influenced. “Robert Joffe”, the lawyer representing the defense, is reported to have discussed the possibility of large investments in the US in exchange for mitigating the case, according to US media.

Narendra Modi, who is seen as a close ally of Adani, has not been directly involved in the investigation, but the case has attracted significant political and economic attention in India. According to Forbes, Adani is among the world's richest people, with a fortune estimated at tens of billions of dollars, while his group includes sectors such as energy, infrastructure, airports and media. Regardless of the financial settlement, the investigation and the final decision of the US court are expected to determine the next steps in the case.
