An artistic intervention by Blerta Kambo on the facade of the National History Museum has caused debate in Tirana. Under the title “Sun of the next day”, Kambo has reimagined one of the characters of the “Albania” mosaic. The temporary installation, which does not interfere with the mosaic, but overlays a layer on it, which neither touches nor damages the work, is a dedication to strength and courage; to battle, resistance and rebirth. It is dedicated to women affected by breast cancer. But debates have accompanied the installation, sometimes associating it with the law on gender equality and other times, accusing it of affecting the sanctity of the mosaic.

News24 asked artist and scenographer Bashkim Zahaj, how he sees the intervention on the mosaic.

Amidst labels of provocation and insult, the work brought attention back to awareness of a deep social problem. Of course, the problem can be solved with inherent policies, but art, even when labeled as an exhibition, can only stir up trouble.
