Former President of Croatia, Stipe Mesić, has sent a letter to the Secretary General of the Freedom Party, Tedi Blushi, expressing his solidarity with the President of the PL, Ilir Meta, who is behind bars.
In his letter, Mesic states that he learned "with sadness" about what he considers to be violations of fundamental human rights against Ilir Meta during the trial and his treatment in detention.
"I am deeply saddened that Mr. Meta's civil rights are under threat," the former Croatian president wrote in the message to Blushi.
Mesic calls on Albanian state institutions to guarantee the protection of the fundamental rights of the former Albanian president, while also demanding the reaction of international organizations for the protection of civil rights.
"I ask all international organizations for the protection of civil rights to react positively," his letter states. At the end of the message, the former Croatian president expresses his expectation for an institutional reaction regarding the situation of Ilir Meta.
