Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has been isolated after coming into contact with a person who tested positive for coronavirus.

In a video message posted on social media on Tuesday, Morawiecki said he had come into contact with the infected person on Friday. The government continues to function normally and its next meeting will be held via video conference - a common practice in recent months, Morawiecki said.

He also called on Polish citizens to respect the measures to combat the coronavirus, by disinfecting their hands, maintaining social distance and wearing masks. The Polish government spokesman, Piotr Mueller, said in a statement that Prime Minister Morawiecki has not been diagnosed with the disease caused by the coronavirus, COVID-19, and that he has no symptoms of it.

Poland's mandatory quarantine lasts 10 days for those who do not show symptoms of COVID-19. Poland has seen a sharp increase in the number of positive coronavirus cases in recent weeks. More than 5,000 new cases were reported on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to more than 135,000. More than 3,100 people have died in Poland from COVID-19 since the global pandemic began in March.
