GREECE - Bad weather has caused major flooding in Crete, causing significant damage to homes, roads, infrastructure and agriculture.

Anogia is flooded, while roads in Zoniana have become impassable. In the Lassithi Plateau, tons of potatoes have been submerged, and farmers are demanding compensation for the damage.

In the last 24 hours, 101 people have been rescued and taken to safe places. According to data from the National Observatory of Athens, 420 mm of rainfall was recorded in Xyloskalo, Chania.

From October 1 to 4, firefighters received 485 calls and intervened in 204 cases, including 96 water pumping operations.

A government delegation will travel to Crete on Monday to assess the damage and the situation in the most affected areas.

Residents of Zoniana describe the situation as unprecedented. Authorities and emergency teams continue operations, while the full extent of the damage is expected to become apparent after the waters recede.
