Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada will continue to be one of the United States' most important partners, despite the escalation of the trade war between the two countries.
Speaking at an international investor conference in Toronto, Carney also addressed American partners, underlining the importance of the shared relationship between the two countries.
"Let me say this to our American friends: we will always be your neighbors, and Canada will remain the United States' most important partner in many key areas," he said.
Carney stressed that Canada is ready to further strengthen cooperation with Washington, especially on economic and security issues.
"We will be an even better partner, ready to advance our economic interests and shared security," said the Canadian prime minister, adding that future negotiations must be based on respect for the traditions and national sovereignty of both countries.
"Ultimately, even in times of disagreement, throughout our long and shared history, we have always maintained a close relationship," Carney added.
The trade conflict between Canada and the United States has escalated significantly in recent days. Canada ended negotiations with the White House on August 21, accusing the US administration of trying to impose a trade deal it considered unfair.
In response to US tariffs imposed in late August, Canada imposed new tariffs on a range of US products.
Meanwhile, Washington has reacted by increasing tariffs on Canadian products to 50% and has warned of a ban on imports of some of them starting September 29.
