The support of world-famous Albanian singer Dua Lipa for the protests against the tourist project in Sazan and Zvërnec has been echoed in the prestigious British media outlet The Guardian, which has dedicated a special article to the artist's reaction.
According to the British newspaper, the civic movement known as the “Flamingo Revolution” has gained its most prominent supporter yet, after Dua Lipa publicly expressed admiration for protesters opposing the resort project backed by investors led by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. The article states that, as the protests enter their sixth week, Dua Lipa described them as “inspiring” during a conversation with academic and writer Lea Ypi on the Service95 Book Club podcast.
“I find it very inspiring to see how many people really care,” the singer said. The Guardian also touches on the concerns raised by Dua Lipa regarding changes to Albanian legislation on protected areas. According to her, the problem is not only related to the specific project, but to the fact that the law can be changed without a public consultation process.
"We can't talk about the history of Albania without talking about today's Albania. What concerns me is the principle that the government can change the law to remove environmental protections without any kind of public consultation," declared Dua Lipa.
The British media recalls that the project, worth around 1.6 billion euros, envisages tourist developments on the island of Sazan and the Zvërnec peninsula, areas considered of particular importance for biodiversity. The article highlights that the legal changes that allowed construction in protected areas have prompted criticism from environmental organizations and reactions even from MEPs, who have warned that respecting environmental standards is important for Albania's integration process into the European Union.
The Guardian also brings the reaction of Aleksandër Trajçe, head of the PPNEA organization, who described Dua Lipa's support as an important moment for the protesters.
"It was a very powerful statement. Many young Albanians, who see Dua Lipa as an idol, have been inspired. This is the 45th day of our protests and there is no sign that they will stop," he said.
On the other hand, the newspaper recalls that Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the project, calling it the largest investment in the country's history and an important opportunity for economic development. Meanwhile, the developers have stated that the project will be carried out responsibly, guaranteeing environmental protection and long-term benefits for local communities.
