The former commander of the Navy, Vladimir Beja, stated on the show "Oponencje" on News24 that Albania is appearing inferior to Greece in discussions about dividing the sea and the issue of islands.
He took Italy as an example, explaining that Rome and Athens divided the sea equally in 1977, before today's conventions.
Beja added that Greek politics, despite internal divisions, comes together when it comes to taking advantage of as much maritime territory as possible from Albania.
In conclusion, the former commander underlined that the Strait of Corfu should also be divided from scratch, as the division from the time of the Ottoman Empire still remains in force.
"The Strait of Corfu must be divided from the beginning, it was divided 400 years ago when there was neither a Greek nor an Albanian border, when it was the Ottoman Empire, Italy or France. How is it possible that the great powers did not know that the Strait of Corfu was not divided, let's divide it. Maritime agreements are mainly judged in the Hamburg Court and we should go there, because there is more space and opportunities. Greece has a claim that it considers the island as a continent. Islands to be called islands must have over 400 inhabitants. Greece immediately sent soldiers there, this is not done. It has divided the islands and maritime territory with Italy since 1977, when the conventions were not yet in place, and we are demanding 100% of it, why? We are a NATO member country and are integrating into the EU. Greece does not have our back, but these are inferior, we have changed 4 Foreign Ministers", said the former commander.
He stated that Greece is clear in what it demands, albeit unfairly, while the Albanian side appears divided, ungrouped and even inferior.
"There, politicians are grouped, Tsipras with Mitsotakis, with the common interest that the sea be divided as much as possible in favor of Greece, here they are not grouped. Here they sit down and see who will make a mistake. I am not afraid of the Hague Court if it is taken there. But the Hamburg Court has another space, because it also accepts additional appeals. Whereas the Hague summons the parties to hear what appeal they have and does not allow more than three questions, and the solution is seen as political. Politically, it was a mistake to send both Albania and Greece and Dendias to The Hague at that time. Because both sides must agree. There are many such precedents," continued the former head of the Fleet.
He called for more attention, as he praised the Constitutional Court's decision that overturned the 2009 agreement, but noted that in 2013 the agreement and the progress achieved were broken, for interests and causes that are still unclear, for which politics must be held accountable.
"There is a political game that is not in the interest of Albania, because it is about a third party. The discussions should be between the two countries. Until 2013, some things were agreed upon, but why was it broken, how was it broken, who had an interest in breaking it, it must be found, this must be asked of Albanian politicians. The Florence Protocol is clear, that the border exists, despite some ambiguities," he said.
Beja emphasized that it would be best to send the case to the Hamburg Court and not to The Hague as the parties agreed.
Referring to statements by senior Athens officials, Beja emphasized that the Greek side is exploiting the space and lack of legal moves by the Albanian side to expand its territory to the detriment of our maritime space in the Ionian Sea.
Beja shed light on a major question mark regarding Albanian diplomacy and the legal steps that needed to be taken in the international arena to block the claims of official Athens.
"International conventions say that you cannot expand where there is no room to expand. Border states, in such cases, make a legal reservation and present it to the UN. Dendias reminds us Albanians today that it has been five years since they increased the sea to 12 miles. This is because, apparently, the Albanian side has not made the necessary legal reservation at the UN to protect our maritime borders," he declared.
