Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply after a series of military attacks and counterattacks in the Persian Gulf region, while negotiations for a ceasefire remain at a standstill.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had carried out what it described as self-defensive strikes against Iranian targets on Qeshm Island, near the Strait of Hormuz. According to the US military, the operation came in response to alleged Iranian attacks on US forces and interests in the Middle East.
CENTCOM said Iran had launched ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain, but all were neutralized by air defense systems. Two missiles aimed at Kuwait disintegrated in flight, while three others were intercepted over Bahrain.
On the other hand, Iranian authorities said they had struck American bases and helicopters in a country in the region using missiles and drones, in response to Washington's actions.
According to the US military, the attack on Qeshm Island targeted a military ground control station. US forces also reported shooting down three attack drones launched from Iran, which they said posed a threat to civilian ships sailing in regional waters.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard reacted harshly, warning that any attempt to undermine the security of the Strait of Hormuz would have severe consequences for the US military.
Meanwhile, CENTCOM announced that it had taken action against a Botswana-flagged tanker that was sailing towards Iran. According to the US military, the ship disobeyed repeated orders from US naval forces, prompting a US helicopter to strike the engine room with a Hellfire missile to disable it.
Washington stressed that the action was part of the naval blockade imposed in the Strait of Hormuz since April 13. According to data published by CENTCOM, six merchant ships have been disabled and over 120 others have been forced to change their routes since the start of the operation.
The escalation of the situation comes at a time when diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and resume negotiations on Iran's nuclear program have failed. Disagreements between the parties remain deep, particularly over the issue of uranium enrichment and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
