The Special Court accepted SPAK's request and proceeded to trial on the merits of the criminal case against former President Ilir Meta, his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi and three other defendants.
Meta and Kryemadhi will be tried in ordinary proceedings, on charges of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets, related to the CEZ-DIA case and lobbying contracts with the United States of America.

Meanwhile, the defendants, Fatima Kryemadhi, Ema Coku, on charges of money laundering, and Piro Xhixho, on charges of corruption, have requested a shortened trial and are expected to be tried separately by the former Meta-Kryemadhi couple. The former president denies the charges and claims that the process against him is politically motivated.

His lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, said that the investigation has not been completed. Former MP Monika Kryemadhi said that she was waiting for the decision and that there were no surprises for her. The preliminary hearing on whether or not to proceed with the case for trial lasted 8 months. Ilir Meta has been held in custody since October 2024, while the other defendants have been investigated at large.
