US President Donald Trump said he was "not happy" with the latest Iranian proposal to resolve the conflict, but few details have been revealed so far.
"They're asking for things that I can't agree with," Donald Trump told reporters at the White House yesterday, without giving details.
A senior Iranian official has described the elements of the agreement that are on the table:
-The war ends with a guarantee that Israel and the US will not attack again;
-Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz
-The US lifts its blockade
-Upcoming talks on Iran's nuclear program will be held in exchange for the lifting of sanctions by the US
-Washington recognizes Iran's right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, even if Iran agrees to suspend it.
"Under this framework, negotiations on the most complicated nuclear issue have been moved to the final stage to create a more favorable atmosphere," the official told Reuters.
Washington has repeatedly said it will not end the war without an agreement that prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In 2018, Donald Trump withdrew the US from a historic agreement designed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, which had been reached by Barack Obama and Iran in 2015.
Under the deal, Iran agreed to reduce its uranium stockpile by 98% and keep its uranium enrichment level at 3.67%, below the level of enrichment needed to create a bomb.
The level of enriched uranium needed to operate a nuclear power plant is between 0.7% and 5%, while nuclear weapons typically use 90% enriched uranium, according to the World Nuclear Association.
