A painting by the German impressionist artist Max Liebermann was sold today at an auction in the city of Cologne for 720,000 euros.
The estimated price was between 700,000 euros and 1 million euros.
The work is titled “Beer Garden near Wannsee (The House on the Lake)” and depicts the outdoor area of a restaurant on the shores of the lake near Berlin with sailboats in the background.
It originates from a German private collection and is part of the painter's later works.
Max Liebermann (1847-1935) was one of the most important German Impressionists and a leading representative of the German art scene during the Weimar Republic.
After the Nazis came to power in 1933, he was marginalized and ostracized as a Jew and a committed democrat, living until his death in isolation and deep disappointment in his villa in Wannsee.
