Since yesterday afternoon, the toxic smoke produced by the burning of waste in the landfill has not stopped in Elbasan at any moment, in the absence of an incinerator that would carry out their incineration.
For a very long time, the waste in Elbasan has been increasing, and yesterday, local authorities declared that the fire was started due to high temperatures and large amounts of waste. We do not have any indication from the prosecution that would determine whether this was intentional arson or if it was truly an accidental fire.
Journalist Osman Stafa reports that after contacting doctors, he also discovered the consequences resulting from the event that occurred in Elbasan.
Consequences:
Respiratory diseases
The fumes that are released contain fine particles PM2.5 and PM 10 that enter the lungs. PM 2.5 cannot even be captured by the respiratory system and go directly into the lungs, where they cause or worsen asthma, bronchitis, and respiratory infections.
2. Carcinogenic substances
Burning plastics, tires, textiles, and other waste releases dioxins, furans, and benzene, all linked to cancer, especially of the lung, liver, and breast.
3. Neurological and hormonal problems
Dioxins and heavy metals such as lead and mercury damage the nervous system, especially in children, and interfere with the endocrine (hormonal) system.
4. Immediate toxic effects
Fatigue, headache, irritation of the eyes, throat and nose. Acute danger to people near the fire: direct exposure to gases such as carbon monoxide can be fatal.
Long-term and community impacts:
Water and soil contamination, toxic substances are deposited in the soil and spread through the food chain through water, vegetables or animals.
Effects on pregnant women and children, increased risk of premature birth, birth defects and delayed mental development.
