The President of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has reacted after the publication of international reports that highlight the deterioration of the situation in Albania, highlighting the increase in corruption and the decline in media freedom.
Meta referred to the Transparency International report, according to which Albania has suffered a drop of 11 places in the global corruption ranking, describing this as a worrying development. He also highlighted the Reporters Without Borders report, which according to him evidences the deterioration of media freedom, underlining that in some cases court decisions have limited reporting on sensitive issues of public interest.
According to Meta, today the main priority for Albania should be the fight against corruption and increasing transparency in accountability. In his statement, he also called for maximum transparency for the judicial process against him, considering it a matter of high public interest.
REACTION
After the "Transparency International" report where Albania marked a scandalous increase in corruption, worsening its ranking by 11 places, of course the "Reporters Without Borders" report on the deterioration of media freedom would also be released.
It is important to note that this report emphasizes that due to several court decisions, the media has been prohibited from reporting on sensitive issues of public interest.
Today, there is no more important priority for Albania than the fight against corruption and transparency in accountability.
Therefore, I once again insist on the necessity of maximum transparency in the trial process against me because I consider it to be of high interest to the public.
How can you take steps forward towards the European Union when all standards, not only of the rule of law and the fight against corruption, but also of freedom of the media and expression, are plummeting.
