A tragic incident has rocked football in Thailand after lightning struck the pitch during a match, killing one player and injuring several others. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, at Santiphap Stadium in Su-ngai Kolok district of Narathiwat province, during a Yala FC cup match.

According to reports, during the match there was heavy rain, when suddenly a lightning bolt struck the playing field. Several players immediately fell on the field, while medical teams intervened to provide first aid. More than 9 people were injured, while the most serious consequences were suffered by 24-year-old Yala FC player, Safwan Awa, who could not survive despite the efforts of doctors. His club has reacted through a touching message on social networks, expressing condolences to the family of the young footballer.


“The board of directors, technical staff, players and all members of Yala FC express their deepest condolences to the family of Safwan Awae,” the club said in a statement. Club representatives, led by the Yala FC director, went to the footballer’s family to express their support and condolences after the heavy loss.

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) also reacted to the event, expressing solidarity with the family, friends and club at this difficult moment.

Safwan Awa joined Yala FC on July 29 and was considered a player with great potential. He previously played for Pattani FC, where he scored 7 goals in 18 matches, helping the team to promotion to the Thai League 2 for the 2025-2026 season.
