At least 13 people have been killed, including a child, and 75 others injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on the city of Nizhnekamsk, in the Russian republic of Tatarstan.
According to local officials, the attack lasted several hours during the night and into the morning. The Ukrainian Armed Forces said an oil refinery in the city had been hit, while footage posted on social media showed large clouds of smoke and flames after the attack.
Nizhnekamsk is located more than 1,100 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, making the attack one of the deepest Ukrainian strikes inside Russian territory since the launch of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
The Uzbek consulate in Tatarstan said seven of the victims were Uzbek citizens. According to the Russian news agency RIA, most of the victims were in a hostel at the time of the strike. The Russian Investigative Committee said that civilians who were not involved in military operations were in the area.
Moscow has warned that all those involved in the attacks will face "inevitable and severe punishment."
