A tanker has been attacked by gunmen in waters near Yemen, according to a statement released by UKMTO, the British maritime safety agency.

According to the report, a small boat approached the merchant ship and opened fire on it about 111 nautical miles southeast of Aden. There was no immediate information on possible damage or injuries.

British maritime security authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the circumstances of the incident, but have so far not provided additional details on the perpetrators or motives for the attack.

The area around the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea remains one of the most important maritime transport corridors in the world, but in recent years it has faced numerous security incidents that have raised concerns for international shipping.
