A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the death of a 30-year-old woman who was found dead in the open space of a building on Kolokotroni Street in central Athens in the early hours of Friday morning. According to authorities, police were immediately notified and arrived at the scene, cordoning off the area. The suspect, an Italian tourist staying in a short-term rental apartment on the third floor of the building, was escorted from the premises and is being investigated for involvement in the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that the woman had left the apartment on the third floor and climbed to the fourth floor. A little later, under still unclear circumstances, she fell from a window into the interior of the building. The 45-year-old has stated that he had had an incident with the victim, whom he claims he had met through an app and not in person before. He added that he had removed her from the apartment shortly before the fall. According to reports, he also had scratches on his face.

A witness, a resident of the third floor, described the moments of anxiety he experienced. He said that at around 04:20 he heard screams from outside and then the noise moved inside the building. “I heard a woman screaming in English: ‘Honey, I’m sorry, come back,’ and the situation looked like a violent fight with a lot of chaos,” he said. According to him, after about 20 minutes of continuous noise, he heard a loud glass breaking at around 04:40–04:45.

A forensic expert also arrived at the scene to examine the body of the victim, who is reported to be of Ethiopian origin. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are collecting evidence to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident. All leads remain open, while the results of the forensic examination are awaited to help determine the exact cause of death.
