Niko Andic, 12, has died in hospital after a shark attack in Sydney, his family has announced. The boy was seriously injured on January 18 at Neilson Beach, known as “Shark Beach”, while spending time with his friends.

After the shark bite, Niko suffered serious leg injuries and was rushed to Sydney Children's Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his final days. Almost a week after the incident, his parents, Lorena and Juan Andic, announced their son's death, expressing their deep sorrow: "Niko was a happy, friendly and athletic child, with kindness and generosity. He was always full of life and that is how we will remember him." The family also thanked the rescue teams and medical staff for the care provided and the local community for their support, asking for respect for their privacy at this difficult time.

Circumstances of the attack
The attack occurred as the children were jumping off the rocks at the end of the beach. A shark, possibly a bull shark according to authorities, attacked Nikos. His friends reacted immediately and pulled him out of the water, an action for which they were praised for their courage and calmness.

The incident was part of a series of shark attacks that occurred in the following days, raising concerns among authorities and beachgoers. Steve Pearce, head of Surf Life Saving NSW, warned that after bad weather, freshwater currents can attract sharks close to shore, making some areas unsafe for swimming and surfing.
