At least 25 people have died in a tragic accident in Cape Verde after a bus carrying around 35 passengers veered off the road and plunged into a creek on Fogo Island.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, when the bus fell from a height of about 30 meters. Most of the victims died at the scene. According to the national news agency Inforpress, a large part of the passengers were primary and secondary school students. The excursion had been privately organized by the bus driver, who is also among the victims.

Cape Verde's president, José Maria Pereira Neves, called the accident a "great catastrophe."

Authorities have launched investigations to clarify the circumstances of the accident, while the cause that caused the bus to go off the road and end up in the abyss has not yet been determined.
