Italian authorities are continuing their investigation into the deaths of five Italian divers in the Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives, who lost their lives in the Alimathaa underwater cave, but so far there is no clear scenario that fully explains the event. According to reports, several main hypotheses for the tragedy are being examined.
One theory is that the divers may have become disoriented inside the cave and become trapped due to the difficult underwater conditions. However, this theory is questionable, as some of the victims were very experienced divers, making it difficult to assume a basic mistake. Another version is related to the possibility of exposure to toxic oxygen or problematic mixtures in the air cylinders, which could have caused the entire group to lose consciousness at the same time.
According to diving experts, such a scenario would explain why none of the five divers managed to surface or seek help. The underwater cave of Alimathaa is described as a coral channel about 260 meters long and up to 60 meters deep, with narrow passages and limited visibility. Investigators have so far managed to recover one of the bodies, while the search continues for the other four.
The event was also complicated by weather conditions, as strong winds of up to 50 km/h were forecast before the dive, which could have affected the turbidity of the water and reduced visibility under the sea. Diving experts point out that in such conditions, even professionals can quickly lose orientation, while panic and rapid air consumption make it even more difficult to exit the cave. Investigations continue, as authorities try to determine what really happened to the group of divers in one of the most mysterious recent incidents in the area.
