The football world is in mourning after the tragedy that occurred in Romania, where a group of 7 PAOK fans, who were headed to France to follow their favorite team in the Europa League, suffered a fatal accident in Timisoara, on what is considered the highway of death.
A wrong overtaking and a head-on collision with a tanker truck took the lives of 7 young men, among them unfortunately 1 Albanian, a fan of the PAOK team. According to the Greek media, the young Albanian has been identified as Vasil Pilo. Another Albanian, Genci Sadiku, was also present with him and miraculously escaped. Three other people were seriously injured, one of whom is in critical condition in hospital.
The reaction of all football actors, clubs, fans everywhere in the world, but also of politics, in Albania and Greece, was immediate: "I have been informed about the tragic accident in Romania, which took the lives of seven young compatriots. The Greek government and our embassy are in close coordination with the local authorities, offering every possible form of support," said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The reasons for this fatal accident are still unclear, but the media in Greece recently published not only the footage, but also the itinerary of the group of ten boys. Based on GPS data, at the time of the accident there were still 17 hours and 16 minutes left to complete the journey to Lyon. The total travel time, without stops, is calculated at 21 hours and 56 minutes, almost a full day of continuous driving. The vehicle's itinerary describes a long and arduous journey, which was violently interrupted on the DN6 highway, just a few kilometers after leaving Lugoj.
Initially, PAOK club leaders requested that their match against Lyon be postponed, but this request was not taken into consideration by UEFA, simply paying homage and honoring the occasion at the stadium.
