US President Donald Trump has stated that he will seek financial compensation from Iran for people he says have been killed or seriously injured by Tehran.

Trump's statement comes after Iran has demanded compensation for damages caused by US and Israeli attacks. In a post on Truth Social, the US president wrote that he is now also demanding compensation from Iran.

"It's an interesting idea because now I'm also asking for compensation from Iran, for all the people they have killed and seriously injured with their roadside bombs and in many conflicts," Trump wrote.

Trump mentioned the victims of attacks and conflicts related to Iran, as well as the families of people who, he said, were killed during anti-government protests in the country.

In his statement, Trump also referred to the attack on the USS Cole warship in Yemen in October 2000. The suicide attack, attributed to Al-Qaeda, killed 17 American sailors and injured more than 30 others.

Meanwhile, Iran has set as conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz compensation for the damages caused, the lifting of sanctions, and the end of US military threats.

The clash over compensation comes at a time of high tensions between Washington and Tehran, as human rights groups report that Iranian authorities are continuing to crack down on government opponents.
