US President Donald Trump has published a controversial map of the US on social media, where the state of New Mexico appears with a new name: "New America".

The post, one of dozens of publications made by Trump within a short time on his "Truth Social" platform, shows a map of the southwestern US state, where the name "Mexico" has been replaced with "America".

The move comes in the wake of a series of renamings promoted by the US president during his term. Earlier, Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed "Gulf of America", arguing that the name would "honor American greatness".

Late last month, Trump also took steps to change the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America," at a time of heightened trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada.
