Major General Fawzi al-Mansouri, head of the Libyan National Army (LNA) military intelligence service in the east of the country, has been killed in an explosive attack in Benghazi.

The incident occurred late on Monday in the Hawari neighborhood of Benghazi, near his home. According to two security sources cited by Reuters, an improvised explosive device detonated as Al-Mansouri was getting into his vehicle. The explosion killed the major general, who had held the post of director of military intelligence in Benghazi since 2024.

The assassination of one of Haftar's senior military officials brings to light the fragile security situation in Libya, where despite the 2020 ceasefire, armed groups and rival administrations continue to have considerable influence.


Libya has been politically and militarily divided since 2014, when clashes between rival factions led to the creation of parallel power structures in the east and west of the country. The Libyan National Army, led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, controls most of eastern and southern Libya and is allied with the Benghazi-based authorities.

On the other hand, the Tripoli-based government controls most of the territory in the west and is internationally recognized. The assassination of Al-Mansouri raises new questions about security in Benghazi and the risk of a return to violence in a country that has been facing political instability and clashes between rival groups for years.
