Two people were killed and at least 14 others were injured, four of them seriously, after a bus veered off the road and crashed into pedestrians waiting at a bus stop in Portugal.

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Agualva-Cacém area, in the municipality of Sintra, near the train station, inside an underground tunnel.

According to Portuguese media, the driver of a bus belonging to the Carris Metropolitana company lost control of the vehicle for reasons that have not yet been disclosed, colliding with the station where several people were waiting for public transportation.

 

The incident caused a large mobilization of police forces, firefighters and emergency teams. The injured received first aid at the scene and were then transported to the hospital. Authorities announced that most of them have minor injuries, while four people are in critical condition.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of the accident, while the area remained partially blocked until rescue and expert operations are completed.
