Ukrainian scientists from the Vernadsky Research Base in Antarctica have released rare and impressive footage filmed by a penguin, offering a unique perspective on the underwater life of these birds.
Using a GPS tracker and a small camera carefully placed on the penguin's back, the researchers were able to record in real time how the penguins dive, hunt for food, pump air under their wings to increase hydrodynamic thrust, and move quickly underwater. The footage also shows how they adjust their fins while swimming.
The video is authentic, real-time and unmodified, giving researchers valuable data on the penguins' natural behavior in their environment. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute and, according to scientists, helps verify data collected through GPS, as well as efforts to protect Antarctic marine ecosystems.
Experts emphasize that such technologies offer new tools to better understand the impact of environmental changes on polar fauna and to improve biodiversity conservation strategies in the region.
