Amid the chaos and tension that engulfed opposition protesters and police last night, a police officer was also injured. News24, operator Aldo Kashri.
In the difficult working conditions in the field, the operator News24, who was on duty filming from a vehicle to bring live footage of the protest developments in front of the Parliament, at one point found himself in flames and immediately got out of the vehicle. From the footage it appears that his sweatshirt caught fire, but colleagues intervened immediately by removing his clothing, fortunately avoiding the worst.
Last night's event is a stark reminder of the dangers that journalists and field operators face every day, in an effort to bring fast and impartial information to the public. Aldo Kashri's dedication and professionalism, even in conditions of extraordinary danger, demonstrate the irreplaceable role of the media.
We wish Aldo a full and speedy recovery, and let this event serve as a call for greater safety and respect for the work of journalists in every situation.
