US President Donald Trump confirmed the intervention, stating that the ship had been warned in advance to stop, but did not obey the order.
"We detained an Iranian-flagged cargo ship. The ship attempted to bypass the US blockade," Trump said in a statement to the media.
He added that US forces have now taken full control of the ship, stressing that the operation was carried out without major incidents.
