European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived today in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on a two-day visit aimed at reaffirming the European Union's support for the autonomous Danish territory, months after the crisis caused by US President Donald Trump's ambitions to take control of the Arctic island.

During her visit, Von der Leyen is expected to hold meetings with Greenlandic leaders and the Danish Prime Minister, while the signing of a joint declaration between the EU and Greenland is also on the agenda.

"We are one family," Von der Leyen declared upon arrival in Nuuk, conveying the message that Greenland must strengthen its ties with Europe.

"Whatever happens in the Arctic directly affects the rest of Europe, and a strong partnership with Greenland is essential for our position in the region," said European Commissioner Josef Sikela, who is accompanying Von der Leyen during the visit.

At the beginning of the year, Donald Trump's statements about Greenland caused a serious crisis between the United States and its European allies.

The American president had also mentioned the possibility of using force to take control of the territory, which has about 57,000 inhabitants.

Tensions eased after the creation of a working group between Denmark, Greenland and the United States, aiming to find a long-term solution to the situation.

Meanwhile, the European Union has continued to express solidarity with Greenland and Denmark, accompanying this support with promises of investment.
