On the night of July 7, a serious incident occurred in the city of Lipjan, where 27-year-old Agon Zejnullahu lost his life after a police intervention.
The case has already been classified as a suspicious death, while five police officers have been arrested and suspended from duty on suspicion of "negligent homicide."
According to the Kosovo Police, the incident occurred around 00:15, when Zejnullahu was suspected of attacking passersby with a car on "Haradin Bajrami" street in Lipjan.
After citizens called, police units intervened and arrested him. During the intervention, he was handcuffed. Police report that despite the efforts of the medical team, the 27-year-old died at the scene.
Immediately after the incident, the Kosovo Police Inspectorate (KPI) launched an investigation and recommended the suspension of five police officers involved in the case. The officers for whom the suspension measure was recommended include a sergeant and four patrol officers.
The same individuals were later arrested by order of the Basic Prosecution Office in Pristina and a 48-hour detention measure was imposed on them, while investigations are underway for the criminal offense of "negligent homicide".
The IPK has announced that security camera footage and witness testimonies are being reviewed to clarify the circumstances of the death.
Meanwhile, the victim's family members have raised suspicions of excessive use of force by the police. The deceased's brother, Alban Zejnullahu, has stated to the media that "the hand of the state killed him", demanding justice and a full investigation into the case.
"There were marks on his face as if he had been beaten massively, on his body...", he added.
According to him, they heard versions about his brother's death such as "heart attack or alcohol poisoning...", but he says that "it is clear that he was killed by the hand of the state, by some police officers...".
Meanwhile, one of the emergency doctors who intervened at the scene has recounted shocking details to the media.
"Last night we got a call from the police station, it was 12 after midnight. They told us that there were some drunk people. When we arrived, we saw that one of them was lifeless, lying next to a police officer. He was still handcuffed. We asked for the handcuffs to be removed because he was unconscious, but first aid was unsuccessful. We notified the police that forensics should be called," she said.
According to her, the medical staff was not informed that this was a person in serious condition or without signs of life.
The case has caused numerous reactions in public opinion. It is expected that the autopsy report will shed light on the true causes of the 27-year-old's death. /Telegrafi/
