In 2022, an Iranian singer was arrested by the Iranian regime for performing songs with anti-establishment lyrics. To give a voice to women who cannot sing publicly in the country, a few months ago an Iranian living in London created a virtual singer with the help of Artificial Intelligence.
The young singer, named Nava, is now playing a symbolic role in the resistance to the Iranian regime, inspiring citizens and urging them to challenge the authorities.
Recently, her song has gone viral on social media, surpassing 13 million views on Instagram alone, with about 70% of them coming from within Iran, even though internet access in the country is limited and controlled.
The Sound of Nava is a resistance song titled “From the Blood of the Youth,” which contains lines such as: “From the blood of the youth, tulips bloomed.” The lyrics are an adaptation of a poem by an Iranian poet that addresses the theme of resistance to totalitarian regimes.
This project shows that technology can be used as a tool to give voice to those who have been silenced and to raise awareness about women's rights and freedom of expression in countries where censorship is harsh.
