The Russian army has suffered a significant loss in the war in Ukraine, following the death of Major General Anton Feliksovich Grunysh, one of its commanders engaged on the front.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Grunysh, 46, was killed on September 12 during a drone strike near Kintrativka, in the Donetsk region.

The commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert Brovdy, stated that Ukrainian forces were responsible for the attack. Russia later confirmed the general's death, but did not provide official details on the circumstances of his death.

Grunysh, originally from Tatarstan, had a long career in the Russian military. He had served in the Second Chechen War, the 2008 Russia-Georgia war, Russian operations during the annexation of Crimea in 2014, and in Syria.

After the launch of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Grunysh became involved in Russian military operations in Ukraine.

News of his death was first reported on a Russian military channel on Telegram, "Suvorov Brotherhood", where an obituary was published for Grunysh, who had been a graduate of the Kazan Suvorov Military School.

Russian state media had portrayed Grunysh as a successful commander on the front, while his death constitutes a significant loss for Russian command structures.
