Hamas spokesman Abdulatif al-Qanu has issued a stark warning that Gaza markets will soon face severe shortages of food and essential goods due to Israel's ongoing blockade.

In a press statement, al-Qanu said that the population of Gaza is experiencing a worsening humanitarian crisis as Israel imposes a tight siege for the second consecutive week. The blockade has prevented the entry of food, fuel, medicine and other essential supplies, creating what he described as a deliberate “starvation policy” against the Palestinian people.

“With each passing day, the situation in Gaza becomes more dire,” al-Qanu stressed. “If the international community fails to act, we will once again witness famine conditions during the holy month of Ramadan.”

The Gaza Strip, home to over two million people, has long been vulnerable to supply shortages due to the conflict and ongoing blockade. In recent weeks, humanitarian agencies have raised the alarm about dwindling food stocks and medical supplies, warning of the devastating impact on civilians, especially children and the elderly.

Al-Qanu called on the countries mediating the ceasefire talks to intensify pressure on Israel to reopen border crossings and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need. “This policy of collective punishment must end,” he demanded.

Despite international appeals, access to Gaza remains restricted, worsening an already fragile humanitarian situation. Aid organizations have reported increased difficulties in delivering relief supplies and hospitals are struggling to maintain operations due to fuel shortages.

As Ramadan progresses, shortages of food and essential goods are expected to further strain the population, raising fears of worsening malnutrition and humanitarian distress.

The United Nations and several humanitarian groups have repeatedly called on Israel to ease restrictions and allow the unhindered flow of aid into Gaza. However, Israeli authorities maintain that security concerns dictate their policies regarding border control and supply entry.

Al-Qanu's statement adds to growing international pressure on Israel to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. He called on Arab and Muslim nations, as well as global humanitarian organizations, to step up their efforts to ensure that Gazans receive the assistance they urgently need.

As the crisis unfolds, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether diplomatic efforts can ease restrictions or whether Gaza will face an even deeper humanitarian catastrophe.
