A massive fire in a residential building in Brooklyn, New York, has killed six people and injured nine. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, near the Sunset Park area, mobilizing a large number of firefighters and rescue teams.
According to the New York Fire Department (FDNY), the alarm was raised at around 01:40 local time. More than 230 firefighters and emergency crews arrived at the scene, but the flames had already spread to the first two floors of the building, making it difficult to intervene.
During the operation, firefighters found four people dead inside the building. Two others were pulled out in critical condition, but did not survive. The fire also injured six civilians, two of whom are in hospital in critical condition, as well as three firefighters who participated in the operation. A hazardous materials team was also called to the scene, after a lithium-ion battery was found inside the building. However, authorities have not yet confirmed whether the battery caused the fire or contributed to the spread of the flames. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the tragedy.
