The President of the Republic has called a meeting for consultations with representatives of parliamentary parties to determine the date of the next local elections. The first meeting has been announced at 09:00 with the head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, while at 11:00 a representative of the Social Democratic Party is also expected to be received.
Meanwhile, other opposition parliamentary parties have rejected the head of state's invitation to take part in consultations on the date of local elections.
So far, the Socialist Party has not made public an official proposal for the date of the elections. Asked the day before, Taulant Balla said that he did not have a concrete preference. However, in recent days, several senior representatives of the SP have mentioned May 9 as a possible date.
This date is also linked to the symbolism of Europe Day, on May 9, while Albania's integration into the European Union by 2030 is one of the main objectives of the Socialist Party's fourth governing mandate.
According to the Constitution, local elections can be held between April 15 and May 15. The head of state has until November 7 to decree the date of the next local elections. For this reason, the presidential decree is expected to be made public next week.
