An attempted carjacking in South Africa has turned into a bloody shootout, killing three suspected robbers. A father, who was in a car with his two children, opened fire on gunmen who tried to take his vehicle, shooting 26 times to protect his family. The horrific incident took place on October 9 in the city of Durban and was recorded by security cameras, while footage posted on social media shows the dramatic moments of the confrontation.

According to foreign media reports, the father was preparing to leave the yard of his apartment with his children when a white vehicle blocked his path. Several armed men got out of it, surrounded the family's car and attempted to rob it. The situation escalated within seconds, when one of the robbers allegedly pointed a gun at the boy's head, while another began shooting at the vehicle. Faced with the danger to the children's lives, the father reacted by pulling out his gun and shooting from inside the car. According to reports, he shot a total of 26 times at the attackers.

One of the suspected robbers was killed on the spot, while the other two managed to escape in their vehicle. However, according to reports, they also died later as a result of the gunshot wounds. The incident has ended up under investigation by South African authorities. According to local newspaper Highway Mail, proceedings have been registered for attempted murder and attempted vehicle robbery, while the circumstances in which the three people died are also being investigated.

A police spokesman confirmed that the suspects opened fire first, while the driver of the vehicle returned fire with a gun. “The suspects opened fire and the victim returned fire, fatally wounding one of them. The remaining suspects fled the scene in their vehicle,” the police spokesman said.
