Integration expert, Gledis Gjipali, stated that Albania's membership process in the European Union would not be stopped if Prime Minister Edi Rama were to leave office.
Guest on the show “The First Minute” IN News24, where he analyzed the European Commission's progress report on Albania, Gjipali emphasized that integration is a much broader process than the will or decision-making of an individual.
Asked whether Rama's resignation could lead to a stalling of the process, the expert answered negatively, describing the lack of a broader consultation and inclusion process as one of Albania's weaknesses.
He underlined that Albania has been on the path of European integration for several decades and that this objective should be a national necessity, not a project linked to a particular prime minister, political force or majority.
"Of course not, and this is one of the weaknesses of the process in Albania. That there is no broader or consultative process, so it never remains in the hands of one person regardless of the position that the prime minister has, is certainly the most important in decision-making in Albania from the structure of the Albanian state itself. But this process is broader and goes beyond one person or a 4-year political process and we know it well, because there are several decades in this process. Therefore, it is important to have a broader involvement and not be conditioned to one or five people because it is very important for the country to be a necessity of one person or a political force or a majority," he said.
