An operation by the Spanish Customs Surveillance Service has led to the seizure of more than 2 tons of cocaine, after a sailing vessel was stopped at sea. Four crew members were arrested during the operation, including an Albanian citizen and at least two people of South American origin.
Spanish authorities consider the operation one of the most important seizures carried out by Customs Supervision over the last year.
According to information published by local media, the investigation began in Catalonia and then the authorities managed to locate the sailboat in the Atlantic. At the moment, no other details have been made public on how the operation was carried out or the origin of the drug load.
This is the second suspected drug trafficking vessel seized by the Petrel this summer. In June, another sailboat was seized near the Canary Islands with around 500 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the cabins in an operation involving French authorities, the US DEA, the UK National Crime Agency and Frontex.
