Part of an apartment building collapsed in the early hours of Friday morning in the Atsalenio area of Heraklion, Crete. Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the incident, while the material damage is considerable.
The incident occurred at around 02:00, when, under circumstances that are still unclear, part of the roof and the balcony of the second floor were detached from the building and collapsed. Large concrete blocks and bricks fell on the back of the building, also destroying the first-floor awning. The debris ended up in the yard of the ground-floor apartment, covering part of it with construction materials.
The loud noise of the collapse alarmed local residents, who came out of their homes in fear to find out what had happened.
The fact that the collapse occurred in the middle of the night proved crucial in avoiding a tragedy, as there were no people in the yard where the rubble fell at that hour. If the area had been busy, the consequences could have been much more serious. The causes of the collapse still remain unclear.
